K2 - Carnage
Reply Quote
Well, the new Katemcy (K2) is nothing short of bad ass! I'm sure as time goes on and the new wears off it might change a little. I was very impressed with the new park. It is VERY technical with plenty of roll over possibilities and places to hang your diffs. Most everything that I saw was pretty challenging. I really don't know if there are any "easy" trails. This park will not be friendly to the cookie cutter Jeep with a 4" lift and 33's. Hope to see you all down for the Memorial Day run. I know I will be there.

Texas Club Challenge

I got to K2 after the drivers meeting on Saturday morning. I unloaded the Jeep and took off looking for a group to hook up with for the day. I joined up with about a half dozen rigs on one side of the park. Two of the guys are Top Truck Challenge (TTC) contenders. Doug, with his old Dodge and 46" claws will be in TTC for the second year. The second rig was a 4 wheel steering, rockwelled Jeep with a Cummins 4BT and 47" LTBs. In hindsight, I probably should have hooked up with group a little more my speed. I did hang with them until after lunch when one of my inner front 35 spine D60 shafts let loose. I wasn't doing anything crazy when I heard the BANG! It must have been fatigued from earlier that morning. I was beating on the Jeep pretty good trying to go up Hanable Lecter. I was denied. The entrance was eating my wheelbase. Maybe next time.

Anyone ever seen one blow up this bad??? It was a bitch to pull. There is still fragments in the axle tube that need to come out.

I initially thought it was my hub or a stub shaft. I am still running the stock 30 spline stubs and some Milemarker locking hubs. I have even bought some spare stubs for the day that one breaks. You don't really hear of people breaking the inners before the outters because they are considerably larger in diameter and 35 spline. Ohh well, maybe its time to upgrade. I cant complain too much. I have gotten pretty good life out of the 31 year old stockers.

To me, it looks like the shaft had a grain impurity in the metal when it was manufactured.

So let me get this straight, you go to the new K2, wheel, and the only picture you post is of your axle shaft....

Just kidding man, nice break though. When my 60 stub let go, it broke similar to that; just not near as long. It kind of split and spawled off some of the sides, there was a lot of little chunks in the hub. I wasnt getting on my very hard either, like you said probably fatigue and age.

Looking back in hind sight, I almost wonder if upgrading to 35 spline outers was a good choice. I would rather replace a stub than an inner, but at the same time my stub took out my spindle when it let go. May have to throw in some chromos when I get started on my jeep, I feel like im on borrowed time with my inner shafts, they were looking pretty old when I pulled them.

Yup, forgot my camera on this trip. My brother took his, I'll see about getting the pictures he took.

Just priced some Superior shafts from LetzRoll Offroad - 35 spline inner/outter $990 shipped. I thought they would be a little cheaper. Anyone know a place? I know very little about the different brands of axle shafts. Yukon any good? Who has the best warrenty?

Does that include new u-joints? You can get ten factory chromoly shafts from ECGS for $690 http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-151991-10-factory-chromoly-upgrade-full-kit-dana-60.html . They come with a 10 year warranty as well.

warranties for shafts are only good if your break the actual shaft and not the ears, which means you'll need to upgrade to CTM or similar u-joints, stock u joints become the weak link in alloy shafts.

USA Alloy maybe?

I wonder if any of them have a no questions asked type of warranty?

I also found these on PORC for $659. I emailed them about a warranty...

And some Yukons on Poly Performance with a lifetime warranty for $830 with Spicer joints or Yukon superjoints for $1130

Too many choices.

Well, a little more searching and I have found what seems like the best deal. The internet is awesome!

http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-11796S-dana-60-chrome-moly-axle-package-w-solidujoints-4-.html

I need to email them about warranty, but they seem to carry replacements for pretty cheap too.

This vendor on pirate is running a deal on slugs too.

I'm interested in your chromoly axle shaft kits. Specifically, PORC26010. Do they come with a warranty? Any warranty limitations on breakage and/or failures?

Just an FYI on this. Ordered a complete set of 10 Factory 35 spline inner/outter 4340 shafts from ECGS. They had them in stock and should be here mid week next week. Also, I asked about if/when you have to warranty one: Give us a call with your CC # and we will send one out the new one and not charge you. If we receive the old one back in less than 3 weeks, you will not be charged. After 3 weeks, we charge your card and refund the money when we receive the broken shaft.

Sounded good to me.

Cant wait to get them in and the new Rockcrusher slugs installed.

That badass on the warranty, I was wondering what you had done about your axle shaft. Why did you go with ECGS? I am picking up a local 79 HP 60 next weekend so I have been looking at goodies for it.

Talked to Chase today, sounds like he's going to make it again this year too.
